Photoshop – Layer Styles

Layer Styles

If you’re new to Photoshop you may not be familiar with working in layers. The ability to create a layer and to build on it – to even add another layer on top of it allows the creation of awesome images.

But in addition to layers in and of themselves Photoshop provides layer styles. These are special effects that can be applied to an entire layer – overall. When working with layer styles you will find a variety of lighting effects, textures and overlays included.

Before we go any further here’s a quick tip: Layer styles affect an entire layer. If you want to make changes to only a portion of an image using a layer style it is necessary to separate that area into its own layer.

To see available layer styles use the Layer Menu and select Layer Style or use the small button at the bottom of the Layers Palette. You will be presented with a menu in which you should select a style that you want applied to the layer that is currently selected.

After making a selection the Layer Style dialog box will appear. This box allows you to modify specific settings, or characteristics for the selected style. When the Layer Style dialog box is open you can add additional styles to the same layer…simply check the desired styles listed.

If you want to make changes to the default settings for a style all you have to do is click the style name (on the left) and the setting for that style will appear on the right. As always, modifications can be made as you like, then click OK when you are satisfied.
